The Rock Poster Society (TRPS) is a nonprofit Bay Area organization that sponsors two rock art shows each year. This summer we are having a joint show with the American Poster Institute,"Flatstock 25- By the Bay". This promises to be a fabulous show for anyone interested in music or poster art. Here is more details about the show:

The Rock Poster Society (TRPS) is pleased to announce the poster art event of the summer! TRPS (a local non-profit organization) is teaming up with the American Poster Institute (API) to present “Flatstock 25- By the Bay” on Saturday, July 10, 2010, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, at the Hall of Flowers in San Francisco’s beautiful Golden Gate Park. Admission is FREE to the public.

The API’s Flatstock poster shows have become known worldwide as premier events in the poster world. The very first Flatstock show was held in San Francisco in 2002. Now API, in collaboration with TRPS, is bringing Flatstock back to San Francisco for the landmark 25th show.

TRPS’s annual Rock Art by the Bay summer show has joined with Flatstock to present an incredible joint poster show for Bay Area poster collectors. Artists from across the US will display and sell their work at this show, including new faces to the Bay Area poster community.

San Francisco will be forever known worldwide for the “Summer of Love”, which was a defining moment of the 1960’s. Come re-live this era and celebrate both the psychedelic art of the 60’s, as well as contemporary rock art, at “Flatstock 25- By the Bay.”

TRPS (as we are known and pronounced like "trips")is an eclectic, non-profit, non-denominational, committed and focused volunteer group who have as their common bond an overriding joy in the art of the rock poster, be it Fillmore and Avalon, punk, boxing style, off-the-wall or just plain bonafide out-there.

Although we are based in Northern California, we have members ALL over the country and around the world. So kick off your shoes, take a stroll around, score some cool information, see what's coming up in the poster world, and most of all, communicate with other kindred poster-collecting souls. We also do encourage you to become a member of TRPS and enjoy the added benefits of membership.

OUR MISSION:

To act as a hub of information and resources that shall be available to all.

To encourage the free exchange of critical archival advice and counsel.

To embrace and perpetuate the ongoing tales and folk lore surrounding these vibrant works and to offer insight into their historical backgrounds.

To bring to the forefront, through public events and exhibits, the many great artists who created these works and to unite them with their fans.

To explore the continuing tradition of rock poster art from its origins to its most recent incarnations.

To attempt to form a worldwide link with others who share the same interests and passions.

And finally, to create a sense of community and fellowship among those who are drawn to the joy of collecting so that we may all bask in the wealth of our obsession.

BORIS To Spend Their Summer Vacation Deafening North Americans

Japan’s most potent psychedelic rock trio BORIS have just locked down their next North American escapade.

After many previous tours to the continent, superheavy post-doom-rock unit BORIS will return to North America this summer in a major way, storming the continent on a tour that will last from the end of July through the month of August. Kicking off in California, the opening leg of the tour will see the band accompanied by Russian Circles as main support for the first few weeks, and by Red Sparrowes for the second leg, which also winds down in the Golden State at the end of August.

But BORIS will not let a tour die off quietly…. This full tour shall take place in advance of the previously announced appearance by SUNN O))) and BORIS amalgamating to perform as ALTAR — as heard on their 2006 Altar full-length — at the third annual All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in beautiful upstate New York, performing alongside Sleep [performing Holy Mountain], Iggy & The Stooges [performing Raw Power], Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Raekwon, Explosions In The Sky and tons more this Labor Day weekend.

Stay tuned for a forthcoming major announcement regarding several new Boris releases!

Sleepy Sun is a California band from many Californias. They hail from the rolling oak and sage hills of Sierra Gold Country, The San Francisco Peninsula, where Kesey raged and the Dead were once Warlocks, and the forever-sunshine climes of the Southland. They came together—young and garage strutting in the coastal Northern California crucible of Santa Cruz. And there they birthed the Sleepy sound—dead blues shaken alive, razor sharp and ramblin’, soul, sonic science and dead-on pop surgery. Wooden, earthy, stratospheric, and swinging…California music of beautiful contrasts for conflicted times.

Now, two records into a frighteningly fast-blossoming evolution, Sleepy Sun are a living machine of fire and focus. Their first release on ATP records Embrace illuminated the golden path to Sleepy land—hard-riffing, delicate, dreamy and cultivated. The latest ATP release, Fever, is arrival at the palace the path promised.

Fever is the honey harmonies and danger wailing of Bret Constantino and Rachel Williams pulled from a tender tangle into steel-strong braid; the wing-on-wing guitars of Matt Holliman and Even Reiss in screaming dives and sweet ascending circles; the lowdown served up tough and thundering from drum and bass authorities Brian Tice and Jack Allen.

Fever is a band working, like the heroic combos of old—real, made by hand, eyes ahead on an unbridled future and giving two shits for the sideways glance of the lurking trend spotter.

A band working, and a working band—Sleepy Sun’s soaring and soul-stirring live shows are already mowing down audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. They’ve opened for Autolux and Mudhoney, rocked Primavera and Treasure Island, and relentlessly toured the capitals and humble hamlets of North America and Europe. And in their path, the converts are fast becoming legion.

They are a band of musical adventure too—tackling Graham Nash’s ‘Chicago’ for a forthcoming compilation celebrating the Hollie/CSNY legend’s work. English electronic collective U.N.K.L.E. have taken note of Sleepy Sun’s eclectic energies as well, working collaboratively on a track with the band for an upcoming single and LP.

Sleepy Sun won’t relent in 2010. Fever in May, SXSW and the Arctic Monkeys in spring. And as always, a hundred twists yet untold in a message—sent with burning love and rock-solid soul—from California to the whole damn beyond….

Also....ATP Recordings will be releasing a limited edition EP to celebrate Record Store Day on April 17th featuring tracks from Built To Spill, Apse, Sleepy Sun and Fursaxa. Limited to just 1000 copies worldwide, the 10” will feature tracks from recent and soon to be released albums on ATP/R.

Each EP will come with a coded card allowing free downloads of MP3’s of the 4 tracks as well as some bonus download only tracks from other ATP Recording artists such as Fuck Buttons (Olympians radio edit), The Scientists (We Had Love), Alexander Tucker (Veins to the Sky) and The Drones (River of Tears).

Tracklist

01 “Marina”
02 “Rigamaroo”
03 “Wild Machines”
04 “Ooh Boy”
05 “Acid Love”
06 “Desert God”
07 “Open Eyes”
08 “Freedom Line”
09 “Sandstorm Woman”

3 Song EP Tracklisting

1.
The descendant of warrior princes, the son of two black African parents, Afro-pop pioneer Salif Keita was born "white." Inheriting albinism, a lack of skin pigmentation, Keita instantly stood out among other Africans and stood out as a spokesperson for tolerance in all forms.

La Différence (Emarcy Records; June 8, 2010), the legendary singer addresses this deeply personal issue-albinism in Africa-and gives it an urgent global resonance that takes his songs from Bamako to Beirut. As Keita's famed "golden voice" cathartically croons in the title track, "I'm a black man, my skin is white and I like it, it's my difference/I'm a white man, my blood is black, I love that, it's the difference that's beautiful."

The distinction is often interpreted as an ill omen in his native Mali, and invited a life of ridicule, making Keita an outcast in his own community. Society, including public schools in Mali, perpetuates harmful beliefs about albinos, and they are often shunned, ridiculed, and even killed for superstitious purposes.

Although he and others have come to terms with albinism, Keita has struggled long and desperately with the stigma attached to his skin color. Though born into a noted caste of musicians with direct links to Sounjata Keita-the heroic 13th-century warrior-prince who edified the ancient Malian Empire-Keita was forbidden to play music growing up. He was also disowned by his father, kicked out of school, and rejected by the local aristocracy.

Filled with unrealized musical ambitions, Keita had no choice but to leave Mali as a young man. Armed with the strength of his convictions, he travelled to neighboring Ivory Coast, then Paris, London, and New York, where his skin color could not keep him from expressing his artistic vision. His perseverance paid off throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as he became an internationally recognized icon thanks to his gravely voice, innovative musical arrangements, and profoundly poetic lyrics.

In 1997, Keita's fame helped him to overcome the stigma attached to albinism that persisted in West Africa, allowing him to make a triumphant return to Mali. Cautiously re-entering a community that once shunned him, he discovered a newfound acceptance, which allowed him to re-establish roots there, including building a studio in the capital of Bamako.

La Différence is the latest in a trilogy of acclaimed acoustic oriented recordings (Moffou 2002, M'Bemba 2006) that were primarily recorded at Keita's Bamako studio. The intimate acoustic environment of La Différence allows Keita's vocal timbres to shimmer and soar, highlighting their poetic nuances and the poignant themes of his lyrics. While the album is dedicated to the plight of albinos in Africa, leading with its title track that aims to increase the global awareness of this cause, the remainder of the album delves into a wide range of social and political issues.

Over a thick sanguine female vocal chorus and rhythmic guitar riffs, "Ekolo d'Amour" seeks to inform listeners about the ecological devastation that has befallen Africa. Fusing the powerful traditional tones of the 21-stringed kora with a contemporary guitar-rich, down-tempo, polyrhythmic groove, "San Ka Na" cites a specific example of ecological destruction, alerting audiences of the need to protect Africa's Niger River, upon whose banks Keita played as a child. With a rough and urgent voice, Keita scorns local politicians for their neglect and complacency regarding such problems.

These compositions also point to the global nature of this album, which was recorded across three continents, including sessions in Los Angeles, Paris, and Bamako, among others. String arrangements written by noted producer Patrice Renson (M., Vanessa Paradis, Ben Ricour, Amadou and Mariam) and recorded in Beirut with Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf give the album a subtle orchestral depth. On several songs, the plucked strings of a Middle-Eastern oud mingle with the West African ngoni (lute), creating a swirling melodic texture of Arab-infused African tones.

La Différence also finds the singer re-imagining a few previous recordings with a new palette of sounds. Harnessing the deeply echoing, bluesy textures of guest guitarists Bill Frisell and Seb Martel, an intimate rendition of 1995's "Folon" offers a stripped-down, horn-absent version that allows Keita's haunting voice to pierce the mellow cosmopolitan soundscape. With producer John Henry, Keita reaches back to the 1970s, recalling his days with the Ambassadeurs du Motel band in Bamako, with a new incarnation of "Seydou."

Departing from the original track ("Seydou Bathily"), this softer version bathes Keita's voice in a rich sonic world of resonant vocal refrains, Arabic-tinged string arrangements, interlocking guitar tones, and a multilayered percussion ensemble that merges sounds from Africa and the Middle East. Given that these songs have been refined by Keita and his band over the course of many years, some for decades, it is no wonder why his delivery comes across with a relaxed, sophisticated confidence.

Further linking La Différence with Keita's long musical career, the melody of "Djélé" is decorated by the intricate balafon work of Keletigui Diabaté, a monumental figure in Malian music and one of Keita's most faithful musical partners, helping him to develop as a guitarist over the course of almost four decades. Drawing on his international sojourns, "Djélé" reinforces Keita's cosmopolitan approach to this album as the breathy tones of an accordion dance with a concert piano over top a bed of deep electric bass, legato orchestral strings, plucked African lutes, and a global array of polyrhythmic percussive timbres.

While listeners may lose themselves in the sophisticated blend of sounds found on La Différence, Keita has not lost site of the ultimate inspiration for this project-the men and women who still suffer with the stigma and health risks of albinism in Africa. As Keita remarked in a recent Mondomix interview, "It's very, very important for me to help albino people, because they need help, and it is my duty, because I am albino, too."

To combat the prejudices that regularly threaten albino Africans, the singer has pledged that all the proceeds from this work will be funnelled into his foundation, Salif Keita pour les Albinos.

Since 2001, this charity has tirelessly worked to erase the stigma attached to albinos in Africa, and provide care and assistance to albinos in need of refuge and medical attention, including protection from the sun. Keita knows its dangers first hand, losing his sister to skin cancer in the 1990s. Over the past four years, Keita has donated proceeds from record sales and tours to purchase sunscreen for Africans in need, and build a school and health clinic in Bamako.

La Différence is an intimate journey into Keita's personal struggles. Singing a hymn of universal tolerance Keita poetically claims, "some of us are black, some are white/all that difference has a purpose...for us to complete each other/let everyone receive love and dignity/the world will be a more beautiful place."

Neurot Recordings is proud to announce the reissue of one of the most groundbreaking releases in the ever-expanding lineage of icons NEUROSIS, Enemy Of The Sun.

With NEUROSIS' earlier releases -- 1987's Pain Of Mind, and even 1990's The Word As Law -- the band's jagged and eerie blend of metallic, hypnotic, post-gutter punk was instantly recognized as wholly unique, yet it took multiple releases for the then Bay-area unit to infinitely define their sound, forcing the world to listen, then run for cover. Their 1992 full-length Souls At Zero showcased the band branching off into much more expanded songwriting, giving birth to much longer hymns, infusing them with tribal rhythms and slow-building post-doom bastardization, then breaking massive new ground for the metal world.

But it was their follow-up in 1993, the crushing Enemy Of The Sun LP, that would be the album to take the pulsing, hypnotizing monoliths NEUROSIS was crafting down to much darker, and much, much heavier territory for the rest of the band's still-growing roster of masterpieces. Still to this day, critics and fans of heavy and experimental metal hold this release to be one of the harshest, spine-chilling, mind-warping releases in history, and countless acts have cited Enemy... as "the one that changed everything" for them.

The eight tracks on the release was one of the most massively cavernous, crushing records the world had experienced. A mesmerizing, pressurizing, dirge-driven display of brutal riffing, thick with haunting samples, layered, anguished vocal tracks, raging multiple-member percussion contributions, and some of the most mammoth buildups ever, Enemy Of The Sun was an album that left a sense of anguish in your soul long after the record was over.

Neurot Recordings are exceptionally proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of NEUROSIS, and once again issue this classic album to the masses. 2010's reissue of Enemy Of The Sun bears a fully redesigned package by visionary artist, Neurosis live visual master Josh Graham, and will be released worldwide on August 30th, 2010.

View the full press release with the release's track listing, quotes from the band, updated artwork for the reissue, classic live footage of NEUROSIS from this era and more at: http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=707.

With his ninth album "All Is Falling", the ultra savant of 12 string mantra
cycles, James Blackshaw expands further into cinematic, orchestral glory -
an orgy of organic, deeply felt and exquisitely played pathways to the
sublime. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by John Hannon and
James Blackshaw at No Recording Studio, December 2009 - January 2010 and
is being release on Young God Records August 24.

All Is Falling, features his first foray into the realm of the electric 12
string guitar and stretches his intuitive compositional acumen to the max
– the album is essentially one slowly evolving, shifting piece of music,
“All Is Falling” Parts 1-8, replete with swirling string cycles and wind
instruments augmenting Blackshaw’s extended pointillist flurries with
clouds of sound, sometimes adding delicate counter melodies but just as
often feeding the implicit waves of overtones until they cascade in an
ever-expanding and all-enveloping onslaught. Listeners willing to close
their eyes and surrender will be rewarded with a pure stream of
devotional, relentlessly searching, sonic incantation. All is Falling
features Blackshaw on electric 12-string guitar, piano, glockenspiel,
voice, and percussion aided by Charlotte Glasson who contributes violin,
flute, alto saxophone, and glockenspiel, Fran Bury providing violin and,
voice and cellist Daniel Madav.

The seeds of this project were sown in the past few years while James was
serving as guest guitarist with a friend’s group on tour. This was the
first time he’d played electric guitar in nearly a decade. Blackshaw got
unexpected pleasure and inspiration from the sheer volume involved, the
way the different old valve amps he’d rent for each show would perform,
and having to be more pro-active in his fretting; he noted that while a
12-string acoustic guitar “sings” or “plays itself,” that an electric
guitar needs a lot more coaxing. James became curious as to how a
12-string electric guitar might sound in his own work and bought an Italia
Rimini and a little Fender Superchamp.

The slimmer neck and the lighter string tension allowing him to play
faster and to reach finger positions he’d previously found awkward. At the
same time, James acquired a home-recording set up which allowed him to
experiment with the arrangements for other instruments, and this became
integral to how he wrote the piece with guitar taking a smaller role in
the overall picture as a result. Both factors had a huge impact on the
new music he was composing as well as the influence of post-No Wave
maximalist guitar composers Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham.

Blackshaw’s sales and critical reputation have been growing exponentially
with each of his eight releases. Press accolades for his last album, The
Glass Bead Game include:

…But for his eighth record, Blackshaw moves beyond those confines, melding
his mesmeric, masterful technique with cello and violin contributions from
members of experiment folk group Current 93 and setting the wordless
vocals of Trembling Bells’ Lavinia Blackwall to the driving, haunting
opener “Cross.” Then at the piano bench for the poignant ballad “Fix” and
the stunning, assured finale “Arc,” Blackshaw makes you forget all about
his guitar and your earthly cares. Andy Beta/Spin

… but his newer material, especially the recent The Glass Bead Game, moves
more into classical and experimental territory with noticeable tips of the
hat to minimalism using drones, piano, and strings. Shawn Bosler/Village
Voice

On his transfixing acoustic albums, Blackshaw builds meditative cathedrals
of sound, full of modal figures and hypnotic repetitions that call to mind
Steve Reich and Terry Riley as much as John Fahey and Robbie Basho. On
last year's mesmerizing The Glass Bead Game, Blackshaw broadened his
palette with the wordless, angelic vocals of Lavinia Blackwall, with
violin, clarinet and flute, and with his own piano and harmonium. He'll be
solo at this show, but his 12-string conjures a world unto itself. - Steve
Klinge/Philadelphia Inquirer

James used to be in punk bands in England, but then he started listening
to people like John Fahey, Robbie Basho etc, and soon locked himself in a
room for 12 hours a day for several years and just played his guitar
constantly. It takes intense discipline and a religious commitment to get
to the place where he's at with his instrument - his soulful and
kaleidoscopic ever-shifting mantra cycles are incredibly beautiful. It
takes a rare and single-minded courage and commitment to make music with
such a powerfully positive force at its heart, especially in these
troubled times.

http://younggodrecords.com

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
